CosmoGeo Lab
Experimental Facilities
6000-ton Kawai type Multi-Anvil Press
This press can generate pressures up to 25 GPa and temperatures up to 2500 °C and routinely produce large samples (~1 ml) for a wide array of measurements and observations.
1500-ton DIA type Multi-Anvil Press
This press can generate pressures up to 50 GPa and temperatures up to 2500 °C. In a single-stage mode, this press allows for rapid synthesis of large samples from 1–7 GPa, and rapid pressure-temperature studies in the same region.
Internally Heated Pressure Vessel
This state-of-the art high pressure gas apparatus will be used to synthesize samples at pressures up to 0.7 GPa and temperatures up to 1500 °C. In addition to the variable redox capabilities, this vessel allows for accurate pressure and temperature control for very long duration experiments.
End-loaded Piston Cylinder
The lab will host a 150 ton piston cylinders to synthesize samples at pressures up to 3 GPa (1/2″ inch assembly) and 1 GPa (3/4″ inch assembly) and temperatures up to 1800 °C.
Additional Experimental Facilities at ASU
In addition to the above, the Knowledge Enterprise at ASU has: a) two 1000 ton and 300 ton multi-anvil pressures that can generate pressures up to 30 GPa and temperatures up to 2500 °C, b) one QUICK press piston cylinder apparatus that can generate pressures up to 2 GPa and temperatures up to 1500 °C, and c) several furnaces that can be heated up to 2500 °C, including a Deltech gas mixing furnace which allows for controlled oxygen fugacity inside the furnace.
